Idol Hunting for Dummies (In This Case Me)

I've been staring at these for half an hour, just trying to think of WHAT they could be. I've tried so manny goddamn variations on "language" and "words" and "communication" but I can't for the LIFE of me figure out what it means here AND ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY. If Katia's message is any indicator, odds are we're swapping after the third clue is given out - I need to find this QUICK if I want a shot at it.

I'm reading and re-reading and re-re-reading and there are a few things I want to jot down:

1. Can either be dead or alive

2. Trait unique to all languages

3. Needed for said language to survive

4. Has something to do with the alphabet - advanced concept? (Speech/words/alphabet don't work, various synonyms either.)

Like I'm FRUSTRATED. I feel like I'm correctly interpreting what I'm supposed to be from these clues (watch that not be the case lol) but I just can't nail EXACTLY what their leading me to. I feel like I'm missing that one critical bit that's keeping me from understanding and its frustrating.
